I am full professor for Human-Computer-Interaction and Visual Analytics at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences and since 2017 director of Information Science for undergraduate and graduate studies at the Darmstadt University. I am Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the Cork Institute of Technology and at the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt) and member of the Hesse-PhD-Center for Applied Computer Science. My research interests include machine learning, data analytics, natural language processing, artificial intelligence and visual analytics with a string focus on human and human’s abilities.

I started with research and development in 2007 at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research (IGD) and worked there until my appointment as professor in 2016. At Fraunhofer, I worked in the department Information Visualization and Visual Analytics and led there many years the research group “Semantics Visualization” with a special focus on user-centered and user-adaptive intelligent visualizations. I developed with my group the SemaVis technology, a price winning, web-based visualization that adapts to individual demands of users. SemaVis is able to perform the entire transformation process from raw data to interactive and intelligent visualizations and was applied to many projects and enterprises.

I hold a PhD (Dr.-Ing.) in computer science from the Technische Universität Darmstadt entitled “Adaptive Semantics Visualization“. I was responsible for a number of European and national projects and worked on a variety of industrial research contracts. I have more than 70 publications co-authored and am member of a variety of program committees and editorial boards, and serve as reviewer for a variety of journals and conferences. My research was awarded amongst others by the Academia Europaea with the Burgen Scholarship Award and the European Association for Artificial Intelligence.
